Patio Garden Design

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your outdoor living space, patio gardens are the perfect solution. We show you how to design and maintain your own personal garden, as well as give some tips on how to get started down that path.

Gardens can be a great source of peace and relaxation, and they can provide a huge amount of productivity too if you live in an apartment building without any yard space. If you’re tired of looking at the same old concrete or patio, here are some tips to help you create a beautiful and peaceful garden space.

Creating Your Own Patio Garden

Step 1

Start with your patio. It’s important that you have something already in place, since it will be difficult to set up a garden space from scratch. Start by measuring out how much space you want for a garden. Add in about 10-15% for pathways – most people don’t walk on the grass because it’s more comfortable to walk on the dirt, so allow enough room for walking paths as well as your flower beds.

Step 2

Next, you need to determine how you want your garden space to be laid out. If you plan on having a flower bed in the center, figure out how big you want that bed to be and how much room you’ll need around it. Don’t worry about the shape of the bed yet – just ensure that there’s enough space for it to fit.

Step 3

Draw a sketch of your whole garden and add in all of the features that you want. This can include a decorative walkway, trellises for growing vines as well as plants and flowers in your flower beds or around corners. Make sure that everything fits into the area that you have planned and take careful measurements so everything is proportional.

Step 4

Time to plant! If you have basic garden tools, you can start by digging up the area on your patio that you want to be your flower bed. It’s best to use a shovel for this, since it will make digging out a larger space much easier. Add in about 1-2 inches of compost in the bottom of the flower bed and then smooth it out so that it is level with the patio.

Step 5

Lighting is important if you plan on spending time outside enjoying your flower beds and garden space. This can be done with solar lights strung up along walkways and around corners, or by adding in a string of lights around your patio area at night. Make sure that you pick out lights that are bright enough to light up the area, but not so bright that they create glare on your patio.

Step 6

In order to keep your garden looking beautiful all year round, it’s important to plant flowers that are hardy enough to survive the cold winter months. Choose flowers that need little to no care and just make sure that they’re not in direct sunlight. Flowers like daffodils, tulips and hyacinths work well because they flower all year long with little care.

Step 7

If you decide that a flower bed is not for you or your lifestyle, you can give your patio garden a whole new look by adding in some accents around the patio area. Decorative potted plants, decorative planters and hanging arrangements can be used to add color and interest around the space.

Bottom line

Creating a new patio garden can be a fun and rewarding experience, with lots of different and decorative ways to beautify your space. If you don’t have the budget to replace your current patio completely, consider adding in some new features like an attractive garden.
